President Meets the U.S. Special Envoy on Afghanistan and Pakistan
On February 19 this year at the Oksaroy Residence in Tashkent the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received the US Special Envoy on Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke, according to the news agencies.
President Islam Karimov, as he has welcomed the top-level American official, had expressed firm commitment of Uzbekistan for further development of the Uzbek-American relations on constructive basis in terms of establishing a solid peace and stability in Afghanistan.
At the moment, Uzbekistan renders a practical assistance in providing Afghanistan with electricity, foodstuff, creating the transport communications, while partaking in social and economic recovery of this state.
In particular, the volume of electricity supplies in 2010 grew manifold. The Uzbek specialists undertake construction of the railroad Khairaton-Mazari Shareef. Uzbekistan also provides a corridor for delivery of non-lethal cargo to Afghanistan, where the U.S-led ISAF now leads an anti-terrorist campaign.
During the Oksaroy talks in Tashkent the US Special Envoy has thanked the Uzbek Leader for a warm welcome. He spoke of enthusiasm of the American administration in consolidating ties with Uzbekistan in terms of ensuring the regional security.
Richard Holbrooke has underscored a special significance of Uzbekistan’s position in settling the Afghan conflict.
The sides have also exchanged opinions on the issues of development a bilateral cooperation and other topics of mutual interest.
