LAW ON ELECTIONS OF PRESIDENT OF UZBEKISTAN UPDATED
Presidential elections in Uzbekistan are to be declared invalid if fewer than 33% of voters participate in the election process, according to the Law on introduction of amendments and addenda to certain legislative acts of Uzbekistan dated 3 December 2004. Earlier this number was not to be lower than 50%.

According to the new law, several articles of the law ?On elections of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan? were modified.

The modified version of the Article 1 of the law stipulates that the presidential term is extended from five to seven years.

Modifications in Article 7 of the law state that publication of the results of various surveys on public opinion, forecasts of election results and other election-related research, including publication through the media as well as Internet, are prohibited throughout the period of five days before and on the day of elections.

According to changed Article 8, the beginning of the election campaign will be announced by the Central Election Commission. Earlier this function was laid upon Oliy Majlis (parliament) of Uzbekistan.

District election commissions are to be formed no later than 70 days before the day of elections.

Another important change was introduced in Article 24. Earlier the right to forward a candidate was given only to political parties. Now, citizens can directly forward a contender. Each citizen or a group of citizens having the right to vote may form an initiative group comprising at least 300 voters and forward a presidential contender.

The modified version of the law also changed the procedure of filling the election bulletin. Now a voter puts a cross (plus) in the box next to the name of the candidate he or she wishes to vote for. Earlier the voters had to cross out the names of the candidates they deselected. The bulletins with several crosses (pluses) are to be found invalid.

The new law on introduction of amendments and addenda to certain legislative acts introduced modification in 28 articles of the law ?On elections of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan?.
