UZBEK EMBASSY IN WASHINGTON HOSTS BRIEFING ON ELECTIONS
Embassy of Uzbekistan in the United States organized a briefing on the upcoming parliamentary elections in Uzbekistan for representatives of the US State Department, US Congress and mass media.
Jahon news agency reported that participants were informed about parliamentary reforms in Uzbekistan and preparation to elections to the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis, scheduled for 26 December.
Attention of the American audience was drawn to achievements of Uzbekistan in liberalization and improvement of election legislature, further democratic and economic reforms, the report said.
Correspondent of United Press International John Daly said in his speech that he was a witness of active preparation to elections to Oliy Majlis during his recent visit. ?US journalist paid attention to high political activity of public of Uzbekistan participating in the election campaign,? the report said.
John Daly, UPI international correspondent, has worked on issues regarding Russia, Caucasus, Central Asia, Middle East, terrorism and energy for over 30 years.
?Daly stated that the model of parliamentary reforms of Uzbekistan deserves high international support and successfully combines national peculiarities of the country and universal democratic requirements,? the report added.
P.Hickman, vice-president of the National Press Club of the USA, said the peculiarity of elections is appearance to political scene of the country of ?young, well educated patriots?.
He said while visiting Uzbekistan he had been amazed with the level of political activeness of the youth and political parties as a whole.
US expert also positively assessed the role of Uzbek mass media in election campaign, the report said.
The participants noted that parliamentary reform in Uzbekistan was the evidence of firm and principal adherence of the country?s leadership to principles of civil society and democratic development.
