DEATH PENALTY TO BE ABOLISHED, UZBEK PRESIDENT SAYS
Death penalty in Uzbekistan should be abolished through amendments to Criminal Code, President of Uzbekistan said Thursday.
Currently, two clauses ? terrorism and murder ? of Uzbek Criminal Code envisage death penalty. Abolishing death penalty under these clauses would be better rather than introducing a moratorium each year, the head of the state said during a break at the parliament session.
Uzbekistan?s people are not yet ready for this decision, Karimov continued, adding that the public opinion polls show that the majority of citizens support the death penalty.
