UNDP project launches OpenSource.uz website
UNDP?s ?ICT Policy? project officially launched the online Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) Resource Center website at http://www.opensource.uz with the purpose to create a centralized repository of knowledge that will increase the awareness and adoption of open source technologies in Uzbekistan.
The website`s key goals are to develop, adopt and disseminate solutions, education and content that use open source software and open standards in support of Uzbekistan`s economic development plans.
With the accelerating adoption of Linux and other FOSS by individuals and organizations in Uzbekistan, many are left wondering where to find suitable information for FOSS. The new website is helping to solve this problem by:
? providing a single interactive access point to pertinent information for users who wish to acquire an understanding of FOSS movement, to learn why it is important and how to apply the concept,
? publishing information about FOSS activities performed by ICTP project and other stakeholders including FOSS community,
? promoting FOSS best practices and case studies implemented worldwide and in Uzbekistan,
? serving as a repository of FOSS products and documents,
? providing online support to visitors by FOSS enthusiasts.
The website development continues the commitment of ICTP project towards promotion of FOSS in Uzbekistan including the recently published Recommendations on usage of free and open source software for development of Uzbekistan and organized Study tour of government officials on FOSS experience in Asia-Pacific countries.
Opensource.uz will be targeting mainly government officials and public servants, lecturers and students at educational establishments, representatives of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and FOSS enthusiasts.
OpenSource.uz features clear navigation, FOSS focused content and a clean user interface for enhanced usability. The entire website was built using FOSS technologies and tools and employs search engine friendly technologies so that search engine spiders are able to index the content on each page of the website.
Visitors to OpenSource.uz website will be able to browse through pre-established categories and/or search for specific words. They will be able to add a new link and/or information on the topic. It is expected that website should be updated constantly with further additions, updates, expands, and other revisions.
The development of a FOSS website has been a long time in the planning. The website will not be a static website and will evolve in response to the requirements of its visitors.
Thus ICTP project would encourage the visitors of OpenSource.uz website to have a look at the website and feedback their suggestions as to how we can further develop it to meet their needs.
UNDP?s project ?Assisting the Government of Uzbekistan in the formulation and implementation of ICT for development policy? is aimed at supporting the development of ICT policy in Uzbekistan and facilitating use of ICT for achieving development goals.
