One million mobile users registered in Uzbekistan
Development of cellular service market in Uzbekistan has overcome all expectations, participants of a presentation dedicated to first million subscribers of mobile services in the country pointed out.
The organizers of the event were the Uzbek Agency for Communication and Informatizaton and six cellular companies of Uzbekistan ? Uzdunrobita, Unitel, Coscom, Perfectum Mobile, Buztel and Uzbektelecom Mobile.
First cellular service company, Uzbek-American venture Uzdunrobita, was created on the initiative of the Ministry of Communication and the Uzbek government in August 1991. It was the first mobile company not only in Uzbekistan, but in the whole Central Asia.
In early 1996, the number of mobile users in Uzbekistan comprised 3,804. During 1996, five new operators appeared in the market of cellular services in Uzbekistan and this resulted in increase of the number of subscribers to over 100,000 by the end of 2000.
Nowadays the largest companies launch their own networks in the regions of Uzbekistan. This is the key factor of competition for new customers.
Mobile users in the regions of Uzbekistan comprised 51 percent from the total number of subscribers as of 1 October 2005. During the first ten days of November, the number of cellular service users reached 1 million.
According to participants of the presentation, the rates of development of mobile service in the country are extremely dynamic, and competition in this segment is a strong stimulus for increasing the number of subscribers by introducing new services and decreasing the tariffs.
Deputy Prime Minister of Uzbekistan, director-general of Uzbek Agency for Communication and Informatizaton participated in the meeting.
