OSCE Secretary General visits Uzbekistan

Secretary General of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Lamberto Zannier January 22-23 visited Uzbekistan.

OCSE Secretary General held meetings with Human Rights Commissioner of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan (Ombudsperson) S.Rashidova, Director of National Human Rights Center of Uzbekistan A.Saidov, Minister of Internal Affairs B.Matlyubov, Prosecutor General R.Kadirov and in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The members of the OSCE delegation were also received by Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis (Parliament) D.Tashmukhammedova.

“Uzbekistan is the most closely cooperating country in Central Asia. Currently terrorism, human traffickings and drugs trade present a huge danger for many countries of the world. OSCE hopes to further strenghthen cooperation with Uzbekistan in security reinforcement, countering crimes, human tranfficing” - said Lamberto Zannier.


Fund for Support and Encouragement of Exports

The Government of Uzbekistan is planning to set up a Fund for Support and Encouragement of Exports. The presidential decree on supporting and funding of exporters and creation of the Fund for Support and Encouragement of Exports is expected in a month term.

The volume of exports grew by 11.6% in 2012 and foreign trade surplus reached US$ 1.12 billion. The share of non-raw ready goods in the export made up more than 70%. (Source: UzDaily.com)

Affordable Housing

The Asian Development Bank is to provide $200 million for the construction of model homes in Uzbekistan: 10,000 standard-design homes and 177 facilities of social and market infrastructure.

President of Uzbekistan approved the program for the construction of individual houses in rural areas. This document was adopted to further improve the appearance of the architectural and planning of rural settlements.

Tashkent, Samarqand and Qashqadaryo regions are the top three regions where it is planed to build 1,050 model homes. 900 houses will be built in Andijon region; 850 in Farghona region; 810 in Surkhondaryo region. Bukhoro and Khorazm regions will get 730 homes each. 700 homes will be erected in Namangan region, while 600 in Navoi region. Karakalpakstan and Jizzakh regions will build 550 houses each. 430 homes will be built in Sirdaryo region.


Turkiston-press launches its new website

An non-governmental information agency Turkiston-press has launched its updated website, the agency said in a statement. The website is accessible at turkistonpress.uz. The agency covers most actual topics related to Uzbekistan.

Turkiston-press has been working in Uzbekistan since 1998. It is the first non-governmental information agency operating Uzbekistan.


Yulchiyeva conquers Belgium

Uzbekistan’s famous singer of maqoms Munojat Yulchiyeva gave a solo concert at the main concert hall of Brussels – Bozar Music (Belgium). The concert was organized by leading cultural center Art Center BOZAR, Jahon news agency reported.

Manager of Art Center BOZAR Toni Van der Eken said that he was impressed with skills of the Uzbek singer and her singing conquered all. (Source: UzDaily.com)

Uzbekistan to hold Road Show in Asia Pacific states

Association of Private Tourism Agencies of Uzbekistan in cooperation with Uzbekistan Airways and Uzbektourism public company plans to organize Road Show in in Bangkok, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur in February 2013. About 10 Uzbek tour operators will present their services and participate in other events of Road Show.

Road Show will include exhibitions aimed at promoting tourism sector of Uzbekistan and presenting its potential in foreign markets for further fruitful cooperation and tourism exchange. It is aimed at raising information awareness about Uzbekistan in foreign countries.


First Uzbek female World Grand Master

22 year old chess player Nafisa Muminova became first among Uzbek women to acquire the title of Woman Grand Master, awarded by FIDE World Chess Federation in January 2013.

Nafisa started to play chess at the age of four and since she has been in love with this sport. At 9 she began training at the Kokand chess club under the guidance of coach Anvarjon Aliev and won the Uzbekistan championship in 2002.

In 2010 Nafisa was among the top 4 at the Women’s U-20 world championship. At the team competitions of the Summer Asian Games in Guanjou (China) together with her teammates Olga Sobirova, Yulduz Hamrakulova, Nodira Nodirjonova won silver medals.


January 22 Ambassador Ilhomjon Nematov met with Chairman of the Subcomittee on Europe and Eurasia at the House of Representatives Dana Rohrabacher on the Capitol Hill to discuss and exchange with views on the current state and perspectives of the Uzbek-American cooperation as well as regional security issues.
