New environment project starts in Ferghana Valley
Implementation of the project on Rapid Environment and Health Risk Assessment (REHRA) started in Ferghana Valley.
The project is implemented within joint mission of the OSCE, UNDP and UNEP?s programme Ecologic Security Initiative. It is directed to strengthen monitoring of ecologic risks and threats to health of population from industrial objects.
Assessment of situation in several unfavourable industrial areas in the valley, including pesticides dump in Kanibadam (Tajikistan), two chemical plants in Kadanjay and Haydarkan (Kyrgyz Republic) and oil processing plant in Ferghana (Uzbekistan).
These objects were selected during the technical mission of the OSCE in Ferghana Valley in December 2004 and meeting with local governments. The work on selected objects carried out within methodology of ICARO (Italy), which has great experience in assessment of risks.
Ministry of Environment and Territories of Italy finance REHRA. Regional coordination centre of the project located in Osh, Kyrgyz Republic.
