President awards a group of employees of the law enforcement agencies

On 10 January 2013 President Karimov signed a decree \"on awarding a group of employees in connection with the Day of Defenders of the Homeland\".

Around 130 employees of the National security service, Ministries of defense, internal affairs and emergency situations have been awarded the \"Shon-sharaf», \"Dustlik\", \"Mardlik\" orders and \"Jasorat\", \"Sodiq Hizmatlari uchun\" and \"Shuhrat\" medals for their outstanding contribution in improving the defense capacities of the state, national security and inviolability of borders of the country, education of the youth in the spirit of national independence and patriotism to the country, the courage, bravery and dedication to the duty to protect national interests and ensuring peace, stability and public order.

New SCO RATS chief holds negotiations at Uzbekistan’s MFA

Director of Executive Committee of the Regional anti-terrorist structure (RATS) of Shanghai Cooperation Organization Zhang Sinfen was received at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan on 8 January 2013.

At the meeting, the sides exchanged with opinions on perspective directions of the SCO RATS activities.



ECONOMY



Uzbekyengilsanoat to implement several projects in 2013-2016

Uzbekyengilsanoat state joint stock company (Uzbek Light Industry) will implement several new investment projects in 2013-2016.

In particular, Uzbekyengilsanoat and Young One Corporation (South Korea) are planning to launch capacities on production of ready textile goods. New capacities will be created in Samarkand and Tashkent regions. The project cost is US$104 million.

South Korean company ŇĚŃ. Ńî will participate in a project on creation of capacities on production of equipment for hosiery products. The project cost is US$1 million. The project will be realized till the end of 2016.

Turkey’s TTM Makine will implement a project on production of textile equipment in Uzbekistan with the cost of US$5 million in 2013-2016. KKC Corporation (South Korea) will organize dyeing and decorating capacities with the cost of US$3 million on the base of Bukhorotex joint stock company. Korean Industrial Technologies Institute will implement similar project. The project cost is US$3 million.

Singapore’s Verigrow Pte.Ltd will realize a project on creation of silk complex in Namangan project by the end of 2016. Some US$10 million will be invested into the project.

Indorama Pte.Ltd (Singapore) will implement a project one expanding of capacities of Indorama Kokand Textile with the cost of US$31 million. The project will allow to additionally process 5,000 tonnes of cotton fiber.

China’s JingJang will implement a project on organization of textile complex on production of ready-made garments on the base of Namangan-based Art Soft Tex in 2013-2016. The project cost is US$79 million.

Uzbek government reduces customs clearance

The Government of Uzbekistan reduced the length of time of customs clearance of goods and vehicles from ten days to three.

A new norm was introduced by the law \"On introduction of changes and amendments to some legislative acts of Uzbekistan\". President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov signed the law on 29 December 2012. It came into force on 4 January 2013.

According to the law, customs bodies should carry out customs clearance of goods and automobiles within three days after submission of customs declaration and all other necessary documents and information.



SOCIETY



Uzbek Government to rate universities

President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov signed a resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers introducing the system of rating of higher educational establishments in Uzbekistan.

The document was accepted to stimulate improvement of level and quality of scientific and pedagogic activity at higher educational institutions of Uzbekistan, achievement of high figures of use of scientific potential of teachers, quality of teaching and training of students, etc.

According to the resolution, the State Testing Center is assigned to make an analytic study of current development of universities and recommendations on further improvement of the sphere of education.

UZ Domain Network Growing

In 2012, the national domain zone of Uzbekistan registered 15,811 domains, which is 17.7% more than in the previous year.

Best month by the number of registrations in the last year (and all the time keeping statistics) was April, when registrars opened 592 domains. Of the total number of domain names registered, more than 54% account for corporate entities and about 46% to individuals.

Most of the domains are owned by residents of Uzbekistan.

SPORTS



Uzbekistan Football Federation wins FIFA Fair Play Award 2012

International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) handed over FIFA Fair Play Award 2012 to Uzbekistan Football Federation (UFF). According to the FIFA, UFF are winners of the FIFA Fair Play Award for showing that fair play and competition are not mutually exclusive, but complement each another.

UFF also won the 2012 AFC Fair Play Association of the Year award.



EMBASSY EVENT



Ambassador Ilhom Nematov visited the State of Connecticut January 8-10, 2013 to enhance trade and investment between the State and Uzbek companies and establish contacts with the State organizations and private businesses.

The visit was organized jointly with the American-Uzbekistan Chamber of Commerce (AUCC) and the US Commercial Service in Hartford, Connecticut.

The Uzbek side presented the country\'s investment program and projects that are of interest to US exporters and investors. Ambassador also met with major companies interested to explore Uzbekistan\'s business potential.
