They Bring Fame to National Arts: Traditional republican review-festival of performers of folk songs
The Alisher Navoi National Park of Uzbekistan has become the venue for the traditional Republican review-festival of performers of folk songs lapar and ulan, which was participated by more than 60 performers. Its main purpose is the preservation in its original form of traditions of folk performance, increasing the interest of young people in studying cultural heritage, as well as supporting the national school of musicians.
Duo performers of ulan Hanifa Mirzaeva and Hayrillo Mirzaev came to the contest from Kosonsoy district of Namangan region.
“I do love folklore since my childhood,” shared Hanifa Mirzaeva.
“Performance of lapars requires special training from artists, good acting skills and ability to improvise. At the contest, we performed the works devoted to the Year of Family, written by our fellowman To’lqun Akhmedov. They ridicule some human frailties, touch upon the family relationships between spouses, controversy and reconciliation. And, in the final of the dialog the love wins.
Lapar is a competitive dialogue of performers, built on a kind of wordplay, accompanied with jokes, plays and dances. The winner is that who asks a very tricky question. In Khorazm, for example, this kind of songs is performed by one singer. In some areas, the term lapar is used to wedding songs ulan that is performed in the form of a dialogue between man and woman, or unison choral groups (representatives of the bride and groom).
Another classic number was performed by the Nodirabegim folk ensemble from Tashkent.
“It would be great if the youth would know more about folk creativity, love and value it,” says Firuza Asadova, graduate of the Bukhoro State University, participant of the Mohisitora ethnographic ensemble. “This is our priceless heritage, national pride.”
The group lapar singers from the Urganch House of Culture, Khorazm region, become the winner of the review-festival. Turdiali Pardaev and Kulmikhon Duisenov from Tashkent region win in ulan performance. (Source: Uzbekistan Today newspaper)
