EU, UNDP PRESENT PROJECTS ON IMPROVEMENT OF LIVING STANDARDS IN TWO REGIONS
The European Union and United Nations Development Program presented on 23 March \"Enhancement of Living Standards in Karakalpakstan and Namangan\" projects.
The presentation took place on in Tashkent at the International Business Centre. The European Commission has contributed 2 million euros for the implementation of these projects while UNDP has undertaken to provide up to 200,000 euros as additional funding. The projects duration is two years, until December 2006.
The overall objective of the two projects is to improve the lives of local communities in the Republic of Karakalpakstan and Namangan. The projects will offer opportunities to local communities to play an active part in their own development. Communities will participate together with local authorities in the preparation and implementation of regional strategies, self-help and income generation schemes.
Improvement of living standards is one of the focus areas of the European Commission\'s regional Strategy Paper for Central Asia 2002-2006, and of UNDP\'s Country Program for Uzbekistan for the period 2005-2009. In 2004 Uzbekistan adopted the Living Standards Strategy to enhance people\'s living conditions.
The UN System in Uzbekistan and UNDP had supported the Government in the preparation of the strategy by advocating for the integration of the Millennium Development Goals into the strategy. The projects in Karakalpakstan and Namangan will contribute to the objectives set out in the strategy and assist the Government.
