In accordance with the Program for development and modernization of water supply and sewerage of the Republic of Uzbekistan, developed by Uzbek agency \"Uzkommunkhizmat\" under the State program to modernize the infrastructure of the Republic of Uzbekistan, a number of major projects is provided for implementation in the country.

They are aimed to develop and expand water and sewage systems in the regions, taking into account the creation of new facilities, modernization of existing drinking water production systems, ensuring reliable operation of water and sewer communications and full coverage of the needs of regions in water supply and sewerage systems using modern resource and energy-efficient technologies, financial and logistical rehabilitation of water supply, the introduction of new accounting methods for consumers, saving energy.

Currently, the centralized systems of drinking water supply are available in 119 cities (100%) and 8,100 (73%) of the 11,079 villages of the republic. The average daily selection of drinking water is 6.25 million cubic meters, including the surface water - 2.4 million cubic meters (38%) and groundwater - 3.85 million cubic meters (62%). The total length of water pipelines and networks is 62.9 thousand km.

Approximately 33.6% (or 21.1 sq. km.) require replacement or reconstruction.

The technical condition of sewer systems in urban and rural areas of the country also requires repairs and upgrades. Thus, 2.99 sq. km.

(44.2%) of 6.76 sq. km. of sewer network of the country require reconstruction.

Due to the great attention paid by the government to improve the living conditions of urban and rural population, in the coming years significant funding will be directed on these purposes. In 2010-2020 it is planned reconstruction of existing and construction of new facilities totaling $2.76 billion, including $1.98 billion for water systems and $780 million for sewer.

Of these funds, the first stage (2010-2015) provides for the implementation of 39 investment projects totaling $1,596.2 million, including 24 projects for water supply and 15 sewer projects worth $578.7 million.

In particular, the following is scheduled for 2012-2015:

• water intake capacity of 2,559.8 cubic meters per day;

• pipelines and water pipelines with total length of 4,435.4 km.;

• sewage capacity of 1,015.0 cubic meters per day;

• sewers and sewerage length of 230 km.

Sources of funding for this ambitious program will be money from the State budget, as well as financial support of international organizations and institutions - the ADB, IDA, China (SCO), IDB and others.

As a result, by 2020 it is projected to centralized water supply coverage in urban areas from 91% to 98%, while in rural areas from 64.2% to 85%. (Source: UzReport.com)
