Hisor Reserve, Pearl of Uzbekistan’s nature
To enjoy the scene of wild nature and keep a lasting impression turned possible to the participants of the mega-tour to one of the major reserves of the republic – Hisor. The State Committee on Nature Protection of Uzbekistan and the Ekosan International Ecology and Health Organization acted as organizers of the trip of the capital’s journalists.
This unique to its beauty and wilderness the part of land, occupying more than 80 thousand hectares, is represented among other six nature objects to UNESCO for to be included in the World Heritage List.
Hisor State Reserve, located in the mountainous area in the south of the country in Qashqadaryo region, is the unique environment with rare on riches of flora and fauna. More than 800 kinds of plants and about 300 vertebrate animals are bred here with care for the future generations. The rarest ones have been listed in the Red Book of Uzbekistan and International Union for Conservation of Nature.
Among others are snow leopard, white claw bear, Turkestan lynx, Asian otter, booted eagle, golden eagle, saker falcon, bearded vulture, and Himalayan griffon. Thanks to the measures undertaken on protection the quantity of rare animals and birds get growing. Bears, for example, could be seen in territories near mountain settlements.
Plants growing within the territory of the preserves turn the valuable gene pool, a true nature fund of genetic materials for breeders.
Juniper forests are the most valuable ones, as well as their beauty.
This cultivar in Uzbekistan is accepted to call archa. It is one of breeds of world-popular cypress. In out-of-the-way places of the mountains there are juniper trees of thousand year old and even more. To the diligent efforts of Uzbek scholars it has been explored the secret of breeding of archa, and now the works on breeding this cultivar are being carried out.
Hisor Reserve is rich for insects as well. There are no less than three thousand species of them. This diversity of flora and fauna is the subject of scientific researches conducted in the reserve.
Among the places of interest of the reserve is the cave of the outstanding statesman Amir Temur. The legend goes that at his young ages the great commander lived in this cave awhile and prepared his warriors to campaigns. (Source: “Ubekistan Today” newspaper)
