CHILDREN SHOULD BE HEALTHY
“The Week of Healthy Child” has ended in Uzbekistan. The Ministry of Health has realized a set of measures on the prevention and treatment of helminthosis.
Our correspondent has spoken with doctor-parasitologist of the Republican Center of the State Sanitary-Epidemiological Supervision Service, Svetlana Tsoi, on the outcomes of the accomplished work.
“How pressing is the problem of helminthosis today?”
“According to data of the World Health Organization the helminthosis is rated third in the structure of human infectious diseases, while the economic damage inflicted by intestinal helmenthiosis holds the fourth place among all diseases and traumas.
More than 270 thousand patients infested with one or another type of helminthes are revealed in the Republic annually. In 80% of cases they affect children. This is due to re-infection as a result of unstable personal hygienic habits, and immaturity of the child’s safety barriers and low stomach acidity. The clinical picture of helminthosis infections is very diverse, and the severity of their manifestations depends on the massiveness of infection, and the condition of the human body.
The helminthes, highlighting the products of their livelihoods, cause toxic lesions and allergic reactions. According to some estimates, giardia is detected in 69% of patients with allergic dermatosis, enterobiosis – in 6%, and ascariasis in 3% of patients.”
“The Republic implements a program for 2015-2018 on the prevention and treatment of children’s helminthosis. Is it the first targeted program?”
“The targeted work has been carried out since 2011. With the assistance of the World Health Organization within the framework of the International “Children without helminthes” program the country has received humanitarian aid in the form of medicinal preparations for the treatment of contact (enterebiosis) and geohelminthes (ascariasis, trichocephalosis) diseases. 300 thousand primary school children undergo prophylactic therapy on this program every year, which helped identify children affected by helminthes.
The Initiative of championship in hygiene” implemented by the Ministry of Public Education jointly with UNICEF has turned into another major project in this sphere. It was carried out in the schools of Fergana, Namangan, Samarkand and Surkhandarya regions. There have been organized sanitary posts, health corners and open “Tales of immunity” lesson-games held at the project’s all pilot schools. About 3000 children have received relevant treatment.”
“Can you tell us in detail about the activities directed against helminthes under the program?”
“Prevention, diagnostics and treatment of helminthosis is carried out in accordance with the standards elaborated and introduced within the framework of the program. This helped to unify and raise the quality of rendered assistance.
Monitoring and assessment of events on the prevention of helminthosis has been raised to a decent level. One of them included conducting laboratory testing of primary school children for the presence of intestinal helminthes, as well as an opinion poll held among school children and their parents on their awareness about hygiene in Surkhondaryo, Qashqadaryo, Horezm, and Jizzah regions and the Republic of Karakalpakstan in 2015. As a result of laboratory tests mass de-helmintization with the utilization of special medicinal preparations was organized at 225 schools.
To reduce the level of morbidity and infection rate of children aged between 2 to 10 years, the event will be carried out twice a year on the de-worming of children. To conduct a mass campaign in 2016 for the prevention of children’s infection, 8.1 million anti-helminthic tablets were purchased in the UK.”
