Pierre-Emmanuel Thomann: “Each country should have its own model of development”
A leading expert of the French Institute of Geopolitics, Pierre-Emmanuel Thomann shared his views on the achievements of Uzbekistan during 20 years of independent development. - Thanks to a clear, well thought-out and scientifically developed own model of socio-economic development known worldwide as the “Uzbek Model”, Uzbekistan from a country with one-sided hypertrophic commodity-dependent economies has turned into a modern, industrially developing country. In my opinion, the foundation of success has been an implementation of economic and social reforms based on deideologization economy, rule of law and phased transformation. The result of systematical implementation of the “Uzbek Model” has been a macroeconomic stability, balanced foreign trade, sustainable economic growth and per capita income, the stability of the banking and financial system. In the way of economic renewal the fact is important that the Uzbek Government has diversified the economy, not relying particularly on loans from foreign banks, which gave the country an opportunity to minimize the impact of the global crisis. Uzbekistan’s experience has shown that each country, taking into account the mentality, traditions, customs, culture and history of the people, should have its own model of development. Touching upon such an important issue as use of water resources and high-rise construction of hydraulic structures on rivers, I want to note that they must take into account the interests of all neighboring states. Not taking into account interests of the peoples of neighboring countries may have unpredictable ecological, economic and demographic consequences. In addition, the territory of Central Asia is a highly active seismic zone, where strong earthquakes occur with characteristic frequency, sometimes with serious consequences. Tajikistan’s intention to implement the construction of a giant Rogun is extremely dangerous project that without an objective and comprehensive review by international experts can lead to most disastrous consequences”.
